The Mike Stewart Big Band (MSBB) was first assembled in 2006. Upon returning to Australia after several years of study and performance in New York, Mike put together a band comprised of some of South Australia’s finest jazz musicians. His vision for the group was that it would maintain a reputation as Adelaide’s flagship big band, while also serving as a vehicle for mentoring younger players by providing opportunities to gain experience playing alongside professional musicians. When Mike suddenly and tragically died in 2014, the band resolutely decided to continue his work in jazz education and big band repertoire development.

It has been over a decade since the release of the MSBB's first album "Collectively Speaking". In the ranks of this band now sit players who were once those very students that were first exposed to the power of a full big band at an MSBB performance. A couple of the young musicians involved in the project now even direct their own big bands, richly contributing to Adelaide’s live music scene. This album is the realisation of Mike’s vision for his band and we are very proud to present ten original compositions by South Australian composers.

Mike loved ‘the hang’ almost as much as the music and we keenly felt his energy and presence in the room with us the weekend we recorded this album. Thanks mate, we all miss you such a lot.
